Mobile Produce Unit
CAN DO’s Mobile Produce Unit is an initiative established to change the nutrition environment by creating access to fresh, affordable produce within our priority communities that are considered food deserts or simply lack adequate access to nutritious options. CAN DO was able to implement a 6-week pilot of this initiative in the Fifth Ward community once a week for two hours between an elementary school and a city park in Fifth Ward in 2013. Valuable information was obtained to eventually inform full-scale implementation and expansion of the mobile produce unit. One of the most valuable aspects of this initiative was the ability to accept SNAP. Partnership with the Houston Food Bank has facilitated consistent implementation of their mobile produce unit in Independence Heights and Fifth Ward. In 2016, pop-up grocery tours were incorporated to educate participants on how to shop healthier. Future implementation will incorporate on site cooking demonstrations, sampling, and nutrition education. *Ongoing implementation: Independence Heights (@ Yale Street Baptist Church) – Monthly ( 3rd Mondays); Fifth Ward (Pleasant Hill Baptist Church) – Monthly (3rd Wednesdays)
