Independence Heights

The Independence Heights community is a part of Service Area B for HDHHS.  Service Area B is 45.7% Hispanic and 21.6% African American, which are comparable rates to the City of Houston.  The poverty rate in Area B is higher than the City of Houston and the State of Texas. More residents in Area B (15.7%) receive government benefits than the City of Houston (11.4%). Up to 60% of the adult population in Area B has completed less than a high school education.  One of the neighborhoods in Area B with the highest proportion of adults represented by this statistic is Fifth Ward. A greater proportion of adults in Area B are diagnosed with high blood pressure than the City of Houston and Harris County.  The rate of obesity in Area B is almost 20% higher than the City of Houston and Hispanics have higher proportions of obesity in Area B than African Americans and Whites.
